skeptics last night during a town hall meeting on his gun control executive actions. the meeting was called 'guns in america'... ...and it aired on c-n-n. fox five's nick lagrange joins us with a recap of what was discussed, and how those involved are reacting. nick? last night's 75- minute town hall meeting was held in fairfax, virginia on the campus of george mason university. the president's recent executive actions on gun control have been both criticized and lauded by the american people. some view it as a necessary measure to circumvent an ineffective congress to make our society safer. while others view it as an overreach of the president's power. in case you missed it -- president obama's executive action calls for the expansion of background checks for gun

the measure clarifies that individuals "in the business of selling firearms" register as licensed gun dealers, effectively narrowing the so-called "gun show loophole".... ...which exempts most small sellers from keeping formal sales records. thursday night -- the president met face-to-face with -- among others-- a chicago teenager, a rape victim, and the wife of prominent veteran chris kyle. when taya kyle pressed obama to explain why the nation's murder rate is in decline, while gun ownership is at an all-time high -- the president responded with a logical analogy to seatbelts and airbags. "in the same way that we don't eliminate all traffic accidents, but over the course of 20 years, traffic accidents get lower. there's still tragedies, there's still drunk drivers, there's still people who don't wear their seatbelts, but over time that violence was reduced and so families are spared. that's the same thing we can do with gun ownership."
7:05 am
also says these actions are not designed to take away anyone's guns or make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to buy guns. he says if that was his plan, he would have started working on that a long time ago. the president invited representatives of the n-r-a to be a part of last night's discussion, but they declined -- calling this a 'p-r stunt.' in the end, the president pointed out some of the past tragedies our country has faced when it comes to gun violence -- calling the shooting at sandy hook elementary a haunting experience that was one of the worst days of his presidency. the homeless man who admitted to killing a former firefighter's wife will spend 42 years to life behind bars. noel stevens pleaded guilty in the murder of shauna tiaffay...a cocktail waitress at the palms. stevens testified that her estranged husband george tiaffay hired him to kill her. tiaffay was convicted for his role in the crime back in september. he will spend life behind bars, without parole. police have

7:26 am
president obama's recent executive actions on gun control have been a hot topic of discussion. so last night -- the president held a town hall meeting to explain whe he did it... and why he thinks it can help keep reduce gun violence. fox five's nick lagrange joins us with a recap of the town hall meeting -- 'guns in america.' nick? the president introduced executive actions this week that would require all those who sell guns to keep records of who they are selling to... ...and would mandate background checks for all those looking to buy guns. some have taken this to mean that the president doesn't want anyone to have guns. so president obama went on c- n-n thursday night
7:27 am
dispel that notion. the president met with a wide range of people during the 75-minute television event.... ...including a chicago teenager, a rape victim, and the wife of prominent veteran -- chris kyle. president obama re-affirmed americans' right to buy guns, and even said his wife -- michelle obama -- turned to him while the two drove through iowa during the 2008 campaign and said if she lived in a farm house with a sheriff's office far away, "'i'd want to have a shotgun or a rifle to make sure i was protected and my family was protected.'" the president followed that up by saying -- "she's absolutely right." president obama also anecdotally used the city of chicago to make his point. "let's go back to the city of chicago, that has strong gun-control laws and often the nra will point to that as an example and say, "see? these things don't work." well, the problem is that about 30, 40 percent of those guns are coming from indiana, from across the border, where there are much laxer laws. and so folks will go to a gun show, and

bunch of firearms, put them in a van, drive up into mike flager's neighborhood on the south side of chicago where his parish is, open up the trunk, and those things are for sale." at the town hall meeting -- the president acknowledged he is largely powerless to sweeping reforms on gun violence -- and that his power is limited to incremental changes. he also says anyone who believes these changes are a precursor to martial law are falling prey to conspiracy theorists. the n-r-a was invited to the town hall meeting, but they declined to show up and discuss this issue. today is the five year anniversary of the shooting in tucson involving u-s representative gabrielle giffords and 18 others at a constituent meeting. the president has repeatedly pointed to this and to many other mass shootings as to why these types of measures must be taken, funded, and

president obama's recent executive action on guns is getting a lot of support from the american people. 67-percent of those surveyed in a new c-n-n o-r-c poll say they support the changes announced this week to expand background checks to cover more gun purchases made online and at gun shows. but 57-percent said they don't believe the executive actions will be effective in reducing gun- related deaths in the u-s. a trial date has been set in the battery case for erich nowsch. the 20-year old will go to trial in june. police say he held a knife to a teen during a confrontation that took place a day after tammy meyers died at the hospital. he is accused of shooting meyers outside of her home last february. nowsch and his accused accomplice , derrick andrews, will go to trial for meyers' murder in march. international headlines for you this morning... officials in brussels say investigators
